Moving Down the Seasons of Life
The writing below has been around for years. I’ve had it in my files for at least twenty-five years. The author is unknown although many people seem to claim it. The writing uses humor to describe the changes that take place in our bodies during the golden years. See what you think:
Remember, old folks are worth a fortune, with silver in their hair, gold in their teeth, stones in their kidney, lead in their feet, and gas in their stomach. I have become a little older since I saw you last, and a few changes have come into my life since then. Frankly, I have become quite a frivolous old gal. I am seeing five gentlemen every day. As soon as I wake up, Will Power helps me get out of bed. Then, Charlie Horse comes along, and when he is here, he takes a lot of my time and attention. When he leaves, Arthur Ritis shows up and stays the rest of the day. He doesn’t like to stay in one place very long, so he takes me from joint to joint. After such a busy day, I’m really tired and glad to go to bed with Ben Gay. What a life!
(note: If you are not familiar with Ben Gay, years ago it was a salve used for joint aches and pains).
The first time I read this I laughed until tears started flowing. It still makes me laugh but my perspective is different since I am now blessed to be included in this population. While we laugh at this say-so, we must remain respectfully mindful about our senior population. One thing for sure, unless our time runs out before we become seniors, we will be affected by some physical or mental ailment or both.
There is one part of us that does not age and that is common to all human beings and that is our spirit, or some might call our soul. It is just as alive at age 90 as it was the day of our birth. The spirit is our connection to God, to each other, and to this magnificent beautiful universe. It is where love, grace, kindness, and beauty abounds. Try reaching out from the depths of your soul to the soul of a senior with Alzheimer’s, a person dying, or one who is unconscious. They hear and receive the generosity of your spirit and appreciate it deeply!
“That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day” (2 Corinthians 4:16, NLT).
