Faith of a Great Woman
Faith in the Almighty Sovereign God, plus a dream, and an intention, coupled with perseverance and the rest is history. That’s the story of Mary McLeod Bethune, a woman who put theory into practice.
Bethune was the daughter of slaves and during her young life worked in the fields alongside her parents. When she learned to read, her total being changed, and she felt compelled to share this gift with others.
Mrs. Bethune’s dream was to start a school for young women of African American descent. She wanted them to be able to develop spiritually, intellectually, and be good at home economics. She moved forward with this intention. And with perseverance, she endured. Starting out with $1.50 and five students, people from every race captured her vision.
What started out as Daytona Educational and Industrial School, in 1904, is today Bethune Cookman University with an endowment of forty-eight million dollars.
“The greatest power is faith in God. The second is faith in one’s self.”
~Mary McLeod Bethune
