Marriage is Transformational
A well-known marriage story is found in the Gospel of John 2: 1-12. It’s at a wedding reception where Jesus performs his first miracle. At the celebration, they run out of wine, and Jesus instructs the servants to fill six large pots with water. Then, the master of ceremony is asked to taste a small amount. He is amazed at the taste of the wine and surmises that the host has saved the best wine for last.
Jesus transforms water into elegant wine. This miracle represents overflow, radical change, and new possibilities. It’s saying that you’ll not run out of what you need. Your life story will never be the same. The sky is the limit. The best is yet to come! Transformation takes place when you taste the sweetness of Jesus. One scripture says, “O taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8, NLT).
In a similar way, marriage is a transformative life event that changes the lives of two human beings. At their wedding, there is an air of expectation as two lives miraculously change into one. At the end of the ceremony, the minister introduces the newlywed couple, signaling that the best is yet to come. The miracle of marriage represents good fortune, awakening, and promise. Yes, there will be high and low times throughout the marriage, but the miracle will have already taken place.
“To have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part, according to God’s holy law, and this is my solemn vow.”
