NEVER GIVE UP!
In the Gospel of Luke 18:1-8, Jesus tells a story about a widow who was being harassed for her property. During the time of Jesus, widows were not allowed to inherit their husband’s estate. It was either passed to a man’s sons or his brothers. She went to the judge whose job it was to hear complaints with fairness but was met with a man who was heartless and unjust. Jesus described the judge this way: “He neither feared God nor cared about people” (Luke 18:2, NLT). The judge regarded the widow as an invisible nuisance. She was poor and as young people say, she had no sway.
Although the widow’s socioeconomic status was low, she had the courage and determination to be patient and persistent in her plea for justice. She refused to become weary in doing the right thing. As a result, the judge became exasperated and gave in to her steadfastness. She never gave up!
Jesus told this story to encourage us to have faith. I suspect her prayer life mirrored her outward character of courage, patience, and persistence. Our faith in a just God grows as our prayer life becomes more steadfast. Our faith in a just God empowers us with courage to be all that God intended us to be. God answered her prayer and moved through an unjust judge.
“So, let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up” (Galatians 6:9, NLT).
