The Bread Of Life

The Bread of Life

Undeniably, eating is one of the most satisfying pastimes in life. Besides the three meals eaten on most days, food is a big part of Thanksgiving, Christmas, weddings, funerals, anniversaries, schools, banquets, parties, church activities and many other events. And there are shopping malls, where we may find almost as many restaurants and fast-food places as there are places to shop.

Even in the days when Jesus walked the earth, food played a central role. Some people followed Jesus because of the food he passed out. If we are honest with ourselves, sometimes we follow Jesus for the food (blessings) he gives. In the Gospel of John 6:25-27 (NLT), Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you saw the miraculous sign.”

Jesus used this opportunity to teach, and his message was something like this: Food is important to our physical bodies, but there is another type of food necessary for spiritual life. In essence, he was saying, don’t spend all your time laboring for perishable things like food but spend much more time laboring for food that brings everlasting life.

If one’s physical body gets weak after one or two days without food, what happens to your spiritual body if you fail to take in God’s word for days, weeks, or even months? Our souls need nourishment. Our soul is most important because it is where the spirit dwells. Our soul keeps us alive. It is the soul that makes us laugh, cry, love, and feel the burdens of other human beings. It is our soul that longs desperately to find peace with our Creator. We need to feed our souls.

“…Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4, KJV)
